This Popular SPF Ingredient May Disrupt Your Hormones

If you scroll Instagram these days, you will see them everywhere, pastel tubes of SPF filling influencer feeds, promising glow and protection in one swipe. They look cute, they go viral, and they sell fast. But when you turn the packaging around, one ingredient often stands out, Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate (DHHB).

DHHB is a chemical UVA filter. For years, it was celebrated as a modern solution because it feels light on the skin, is stable in formulas, and leaves no white cast. It became the darling of new brands targeting a younger audience that wanted chic SPF products that looked good online.

The Problem With DHHB

Behind the marketing shine is a reality the industry rarely talks about. DHHB is almost always produced in China, where laws and regulations for chemical manufacturing are minimal compared to European standards. This means there is very little oversight on how consistently or safely it is made, which increases the risk of contamination.

In 2025, the European Union’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) confirmed that DHHB can contain di n hexyl phthalate (DnHexP), a contaminant linked to hormone disruption and reproductive problems.

The EU reacted strongly. From January 2027, any cosmetic product that contains DHHB must prove that contamination levels are below 10 ppm, with a recommendation that they should be as low as 1 ppm.

This will force many skincare brands to reformulate, relabel, or discontinue entire product lines.

Why Mudmasky Never Used It

Mudmasky has never included DHHB in any formula. Not once. While other brands jumped on the bandwagon because it made products look lightweight and trendy, we stayed true to our philosophy.

  • No shortcuts, we only choose pH balanced, skin friendly, and transparent ingredients.

  • No reformulation panic, because we never used risky chemical filters, our products remain consistent and compliant.

  • Trust before trend, our customers deserve skincare that will not suddenly change when the law does.

What This Means For You

In the next two years, you will see certain influencer driven SPF brands quietly change their packaging, update formulas, or pull products completely. The reason is simple, DHHB is under strict EU control, and its supply chain is far from clean.

With Mudmasky, nothing changes. Our products are future proof because we never touched ingredients that carry such risks.
